Platteklip is the simplest, quickest and most direct route to the top of Table Mountain. I like to call it people high way because on a warm summers weekend you will literally be hiking over people to get to the top! All that being said its definitely not one to take lightly. It’s still going to take the average person 2.5 hours to climb the nearly 800 double sized steps to the top! But I’ve seen everyone from toddlers to grannies going up and down so I’m sure you can make it.
The hike starts just off tafelberg road (marked on the map below) and after that it’s pretty straightforward, you head up! Initially you wont really be able to see the gorge but then after about 20 min of hiking you will be able to look up and see your route to the top. Follow the winding switchbacks all the way up until the gorge slowly narrows and you’ll eventually pop out on the top of the mountain. You can either go left and head up to Maclear’s beacon or you can head right to the upper cable station. Both have awesome views of the city and the top of the mountain. There are so many things to see on top of the mountain so find one of the maps, normally located and any path intersection, work out how much time you have before you need to be back down and go and explore!
When it’s time to head down you have a choice; if you’re feeling tired and fatigued then it’s probably a better idea to cough up the R100 and catch the Cable Car down, saves you from falling on your face down those 800 giant steps. If you’re feeling strong and are planning to walk down just remember that its still going to take you about 2 hours to get down so leave enough time because you don’t want to be walking in the dark.
The last thing to remember is that you are on Table Mountain. It’s a real mountain. Don’t be fooled by the fact that its only 5 minutes away from having a flat white at truth, it’s still a serious mountain and it deserves a health respect. Make sure you pack warm clothes and plenty of water. The weather can go from a lovely day to think ass cloud and a howling wind in 30min! If you do find yourself in hectic weather, poor visibility and you are unsure of where you are going, find yourself shelter from the wind and just relax and wait it out, many people have literally walked off the side of the mountain. Enough with the hectic stuff, just get up there, explore, have fun and don’t be an idiot!
