Welcome to the Red Zone! Now shit gets serious! This trail, up KP down PG, is no joke and not for the weak or feeble. The run takes you up and down some of the most popular and well-traveled trails on Table Mountain. Kasteelspoort is the KP and Platteklip Gorge is the PG, both of which you should be familiar with before trying to run them in the same day. Don’t be fooled by the roughly 15km of distance this a hard technical run and will probably take you over 2 ½ hours. Now that we have the introductions out the way lets get straight to the route!
Your starting point is the top of Kloof Nek where the pipe track begins, see map below. Enjoy the flatness of the pipe track and get those legs properly warmed up. After about 15min of running you will see a sign that points up and says Kasteelspoort, take that trail. This is where the fun starts! Enjoy the beautiful climb to the top and don’t forget to stop on the flat rock to catch your breath. The flat rock marks the half way point of the climb and the second half is defiantly easier then the first!
Once you reach the top Hang a left and from now on follow the signs that either say Platteklip Gorge or Cable station. The Trail on the top of the mountain has some unbelievable views so make sure you take the time to look up from the trail and take it all in. There are two climbs on the top of the mountain one out of the valley of isolation and one up to the back of Platteklip Gorge, both short and hard.
Once you have taken in the sights on top of the mountain and let your legs catch a break head down through Platteklip Gorge. Once you get close to the bottom you will meet the contour path that runs along the face of Table Mountain. Swing a left and follow this till you reach the trig beacon at the end. At this point head down and back to car. Once you’re down pat yourself on the back and try to take in what you just did! ☺
